Wesley'due south Notes for John x:xviii

10:eighteen I lay it downwards of myself - By my own free act and human activity. I accept power to lay it down, and I take ability to accept it again - I take an original power and right of myself, both to lay information technology down every bit a ransom, and to take information technology again, later on total satisfaction is made, for the sins of the whole world. This committee accept I received of my Begetter - Which I readily execute. He chiefly spoke of the Father, before his suffering: of his own glory, after it. Our Lord'due south receiving this commission every bit mediator is not to be considered as the ground of his power to lay down and resume his life. For this he had in him self, every bit having an original right to dispose thereof, antecedent to the Male parent's committee. But this committee was the reason why he thus used his power in laying down his life. He did it in obedience to his Father.

Joh 10:18 I lay it downwardly of myself. His life. He gave himself for man of his complimentary volition. He laid it down on the cantankerous; he took it up when he rose from the dead. Abbott says of the lesson in Joh ten:one-eighteen, "I understand this lesson to be a parable with a double awarding. Commencement, Christ compares the Pharisees to shepherds, himself to the door, and declares that those just are true shepherds who enter through the door; that is, through Christ and his say-so. All others are thieves and robbers. And then he changes the application and declares himself the good shepherd whose praises David and Isaiah sung, and indicates the nature of the service that he will return unto his sheep past giving for them his life".
